The work is based on a 1941 text by Cesare Zavattini which has been reworked.
The original text is striking for its lucid words about the solitude that makes each individual an island in an infinite archipelago. At the same time everyone is pushed towards a common feeling, which is often perceived as an insurmountable limit. A desire towards an equality that is difficult to achieve.
The work is exhibited in an isolated room, in its closed version. Two people are required to enter the room. Once inside the room one can choose to observe the closed work and leave, or stay and open it.
It's autumn. Ivo and Mirko sit on the bank of the ditch with their collars turned up. A flock of birds passes by. Ivo looks on in admiration. It’s windy, the houses are wrapped in a great cloud of dust. High up on the embankment, you pedal with difficulty.
Ivo reads from the newspaper the story of Giuliano, a child killed by a bus. A dramatic fatality. As he reads, Ivo hears the screeching of wheels during braking. He stop reading as if to stop the bus ride.
Mirko tips a rod with his penknife. He doesn't feel the same. He is hardened. He is touched by an unmotivated and uncontrollable fantasy that he will later confess to his friend: pushing Ivo into the ditch. He takes his head in his hands - I would like to feel what you feel too. It's not right. -
Ivo has understood. Now he shows the beauty of the field on the horizon: - Look how beautiful! - Mirko is silent. His shoulders are hard under the hands of Ivo who moves him gently so that he can observe the landscape from his own point. (Manuela Cirino 2012)
